Halfling Religion

Halflings are not a pious race by nature, and worship only a few gods. Magda the Giver is the mother-goddess of the people, foremost in their small pantheon. She is the patron of rich harvests and domestic peace, and every halfling has a good word for her at home and at table. Belm is what passes for a halfling war-god, exemplar of dog-riders, slingers, and knifemen. He roams the far field to drive off predators and protect the village. The god known as Black Ammet is the wicked rogue and troublemaker of the halflings, a name readily cursed by the law-abiding and privately petitioned when some cunning deed must be done for the good of the village. His facets include not only those of murder and selfish destruction, but also protective stealth and righteous vengeance upon oppressive big folk.

Halfling clergy are few, with most religious rituals being common celebrations familiar to all halflings. Most villages have one or two old men or women who know more of the gods and are sought for their blessings. These elders usually have a nephew or niece interested in the topic, and when they pass away their apprentices either take up the post or turn to farming, depending on the needs of the village and the number of students.

Other halflings have adopted the gods of the culture in which they live, with human deities popular choices among the little folk. Some have even gone so far as to follow the elven Creeds, a thing viewed with distinct puzzlement by the elves but no overt disdain. These clergy gain divine powers as appropriate for their principles, becoming clerics, favored souls, crusaders, druids, or spirit shamans as the case may be.
