Zanshi Gui-ho's family may have been nobility once, perhaps before the tide came, perhaps early in Xian's history. It doesn't matter now. All that hints of a shining past is the gleaming jian longsword he has, handed down from his mother from unknown ancestors. Gui-ho lived in poverty with his mother, his father unknown, eking out a living. It was enough, with Gui-ho contenting himself with tales and stories of past heroes.
That changed when his mother took sick with a wasting sickness, and eventually succumbed. Now a youth of the streets, Gui-ho fiercly guarded his family's blade, keeping it tucked away in blankets, always on his person. Surviving on the streets, he still aspired to the old tales, and dreamed of becoming more, maybe reclaiming the respectablity his ancestors once had. Entranced by the takes of daring swordsaints, he stole his education, learning what he could here and there. Studying purloined scrolls, practicing with his sword in secret, he finally took grasp of the secrets, even teaching himself to wrap the swordsaint's warding about him like armor.
Now Gui-Ho seeks to make a place for himself, by honorable means. By coin or repute, by honorable spoils or coming to be a hero of Xian, he intends to rise.

Appearance:
Gui-ho is a Xian youth of wiry frame. His skin is tanned; his hair, long, dark, and braided, hangs down to his shoulder. His dark eyes show a glimmer of intelligence, but at times burn with determination and shine with kindness. He goes about in common clothes: a loose, sleeveless tan shirt, a knee-length brown sarong, and sandals. The only thing, in fact, that hints at him being anything but a street urchin is that which hangs from his back; a sling of rough material and dark hue, out of with emerges the tasseled and wrapped hilt of a jian.
